On November 17, 2023, amendments to the Regulation on health and safety at work for screen monitors at workstations came into force in Poland. These changes redefine key terms and introduce new rules for using portable systems at workstations, including remote setups.
Key Definitions: Understanding the Workstation
The new regulation updates the definition of a workstation. It now includes a space with essential equipment like a screen monitor, keyboard, mouse, user interface software, chair, and table or work surface. Optional additional equipment includes a disk station, printer, scanner, document holder, and footrest.
Adapting Workstations to New Rules
New workstations in Poland must comply with the updated rules immediately. Existing workstations need to be adapted by May 17, 2024. This adjustment period allows for the integration of new ergonomic requirements.
Health Care: Eye Protection
Employers in Poland must now provide corrective glasses or contact lenses if recommended by a doctor. This is based on eye exams conducted as part of preventive health care. Including contact lenses directly addresses practical concerns.
Monitor or Laptop Stand Requirements
When using portable systems like laptops for at least half of the workday, workstations must have a desktop monitor or stand. This setup ensures the screen’s top edge is at eye level and includes an additional keyboard and mouse.
Screen Monitor Standards
The regulation specifies that screen monitors must meet the following standards:
- Characters on the screen must be clear and legible.
- The image should be stable, without flickering.
- Brightness and contrast should be easily adjustable based on lighting conditions.
- The monitor must allow tilting for ergonomic positioning.
Work Surface Requirements
The new rules simplify the design requirements for tables and work surfaces. The updated annex specifies that tables should allow for ergonomic positioning of equipment, including adjustable heights for the monitor and keyboard.
Conclusion: Navigating the New Regulations
These amendments mark a significant step in improving workplace ergonomics and health standards for screen monitor users in Poland. Employers must act promptly to align with these regulations and ensure compliance by the set deadlines.
